Link building – by the thread to the puck

To be able to talk about any issues related to linking strategy, for the sake of clarity – let’s remind what a link in itself actually is.

A link is a piece of digital product, such as a website or an electronic document, that links to another digital product. Other terms for a link include hyperlink or hypertext, or simply referrer or link. Links often take the form of text, but are also placed on pages in graphical form. The main purpose of links is to shorten the user’s path to content (or a service or product) that might interest them.

Links facilitate movement both within a given website (internal links) and between different sites (external links). Do you already see this potential? Imagine – you run an online spice store. How do you think – to what extent will your site’s traffic increase if, even on one of the moderately popular cooking blogs, a link to your product appears in some recipe? Exactly. And that’s just the beginning of the possibilities offered by linkbuilding.

Links and their types

Now that we know what a link actually is, it is worth distinguishing a few of its types. This will help us better understand what linkbuilding is (or rather, what it can be, if well implemented) in the context of SEO. Thus, we can divide links into:

  • internal links – these are links that make it easier for a user to navigate through a given website, efficiently reach subpages of the site, specific products, services, etc. This type of linking has a positive effect on the positioning of the site in the search engine, although not to an impressive extent
  • external links – are used to refer the user from one website to another. The case outlined above of referring a cooking blog post to a spice store is an example of just such linking. External links work to the benefit of the site in two ways – not only do they lead new customers to us, but they are also very good for the positioning of the site in the search engine ranking. We can distinguish between natural, acquired and sponsored external links and outbound links (i.e. it is on our site that we place a link to another site)
  • follow and dofollow and nofollow links – i.e. links that have these attributes, carriers of information for Google’s robots, whether or not to include the link’s power in calculating a site’s search engine ranking. While fallow/dofollow is the default link option, nofollow requires the inclusion of a notation in the html code. Nofollow links are often used in comments and on discussion forums. Their role – although often underestimated – is important, if only for building a site’s credibility for Google. However, this does not change the fact that it is the follow links that are seen as the most valuable and great for positioning the site.

Link building – building a link profile – the more, the better?

As already stated, link building is more of a strategy of activities than a single activity. This strategy consists in successive building of a profile of links leading to a given website. An extremely important issue here is to bet on the quality of links, rather than their quantity. It is around this issue that some controversy sometimes arises, giving link building a reputation damage. But is it rightly so? Of course – no. And although link building carries a negligible shadow of risk (which only stirs up the blood and boosts the enthusiasm of passionate SEOs), it is undoubtedly an important pillar of SEO. It must be stressed that acquiring high-value links is a difficult task.

Link building – in a nutshell

Here are some sometimes overlooked but fundamental truths about link building.

  1. You need it. To this day, we encounter theories that having good content, link building is unnecessary – nothing could be further from the truth. You will know the power of good SEO by combining good content with link building. It really works like this.
  2. One way of getting links is not enough. Do you want to focus solely on outreach, i.e. sending out emails requesting publication to industry portals or bloggers, for example? Quite a poor idea that is unlikely to bring you visible benefits. It’s worth betting on variety, which promotes the impression of naturalness. Ot.
  3. One-off link packages will not meet your expectations. A sudden jump in the number of links is not natural, which Google will notice quite easily and may impose a penalty. Besides, it is the progression that is effective, not the stagnation that follows after one shot.
  4. It’s worth putting more than just a redirect to the product you’re selling. Linking to valuable content on the blog, has a positive effect on building domain value, and after all, that’s what it’s all about too.

Link strategy – positioning with white gloves?

The fact that Google is governed by its own laws, and indexing a website by its robots is the result of many calculations, everyone should know. For violating Google’s accepted paradigms of operation, the Internet powerhouse imposes penalties or blocks sites. Therefore, when implementing a link building strategy, one must be careful. Linking itself is a natural phenomenon, and it is this naturalness in planned and conscious actions that should be preserved. Interfering with link building should be as inconspicuous as possible.

Link building vs. whisper marketing

We write about whisper marketing in a separate article. However, in the context of link building, it is worth recalling this concept. The space of whisper marketing is largely forums. Due to the unfortunately common low quality of marketing posts, they are controversial. It probably happened to each of us on the forum at least to a total inadequate as to the topic of discussion advertising. Bad practices are still common, generating more anti-advertising than promotion of the site in question. Our agency implements whisper marketing campaigns with the utmost attention to detail, resulting in great SEO results and a real boost in website traffic.

At Re Ben Gesta, with whisper marketing it’s like with link building – we just do it right.

  1. Blogs

A natural space for linking is a blog, which, set up as an independent site, can serve a complementary function to a company website. By publishing valuable content on it, responding to the needs of users (but also SEO), we can direct readers directly to the site, precisely through the links posted in the articles.

  2. Sponsored articles

A very effective form of link building, consisting in publishing content on various, preferably popular and valuable portals. This type of activity increases reach and influences search engine positioning of the site. Be careful not to duplicate content already published on a company website (e.g., a blog), as Google's algorithms are sensitive to duplicates, and as a result the site may be demoted in search engine ranking.

  3. Social media

Undoubtedly, activity on social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (and recently even Tik Tok), positively affects the company's image and online presence. By building a community around a company, we bring users closer to it, build relationships and gain traffic to the site.

  4. Internet forums

Online discussion forums, especially industry forums, are a space for users to ask questions. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and reflexes by providing answers, clarifying contentious issues, and thus encouraging the use of the company's offerings. This will probably be facilitated by a posted link to the site's page. Naturally, effectively, without imposing yourself.

  5. Business directories

Once - the primary source of links. They are most often used for the positioning of company sites, because in addition to the link, it is possible to include there the contact information of the company. It is very important that the directory be industry-specific - thematically related to the company

FAQFrequently asked
questions

What is an anchor?

Before we explain this concept, we must point out that using an anchor when linking is prohibited and will result in a penalty by Google. You need to develop and follow a very thoughtful external linking strategy so that it brings benefits, not… a ban and a penalty.

However, we return to the substance.

Anchor is a text, after clicking on it, we are taken to another website. It is a word or phrase sewn into the HTML code. A keyword can be used in the anchor.

What is the difference between off-site linking and on-site linking?

Off-site linking, or external linking, is linking to a site off-site, that is, to other sites. Internal linking, or on-site linking, involves placing links on a site that refer to, for example, another tab, product, or article within the same site.

How much does link building cost?

Basically, it all depends on your budget that you decide to allocate for external linking.

Can I post links to my site on my own, for example, in online forums?

Sure, you can. But you must remember that this is a time-consuming activity that requires caution and sensitivity. Don’t post links to your site anywhere – this can lower your authority and end up doing more harm than good. In the vast majority of cases, it is better to invest time in the substance of your business than in the laborious search for a suitable place to post links.

However, if you, as a specialist in a particular field, are a member of an industry forum and answer another user’s question or solve their problem – don’t hesitate to post a link to your site.
